Fills Constructed With A 'RLRLRF' Movement In 9/8

In this 9/8 fill construction lesson you will be applying the RLRLRF fill building block used previously as syncopated rhythm in 4/4. In 9/8 the six note block fits really nicely, creating a compound style rhythm by playing the movement three times.

If you have covered the lesson on the base sticking pattern, you just need to get your head around the new timing. Listed below are several versions of this pattern orchestrated in various ways. The first couple of exercises are kept nice and simple to familiarize you with the part.

TASK

  • Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises upto a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  • Play a four bar phrase in 9/8 where the fourth contains an RLRF style fill. Repeat this phrase over.
  • Create your own 16th note 9/8 fills using this phrasing, write down any that you really like.
  • Create variations on the given examples.
