Displacing Level 0 Grooves By One Eighth

This groove concept is a very interesting and very easy way of creating new and interesting patterns using existing parts. The idea of displacement has been discussed and applied in a few previous lessons but has always involved taking just one note out of the bar and shifting it forwards or backwards. In this lesson you will be applying this concept to a whole bars worth of music. All examples on this page will involve taking a Level 0 Groove then shifting the kicks and snares either one eighth note forwards or backwards. Whilst doing this, if a note falls outside of the bar lines, it can be ignored. If you wish you can add this to the bar before or after the groove but for this lesson they will be left out. The right hand part for now will remain the same. This will all become clear as your progress through the lessons.

When using this groove construction method it is often best to write out your part before playing it. It makes a really cool variation in the fourth or second bar of the phrase and creates an almost syncopated rhythm against the right hand.

Shown below are all level 0 grooves shifted one eighth note backwards on the left and forwards on the right. A combination of different right hand patterns have been used but remember to experiment with as many combinations as you can think of with each groove example.
