Double Stroke Roll In Staggered Groups Of Four || A Free Rudiment Lesson

Continuing with ideas for orchestrating a double stroke roll, in this free rudiment lesson you will be taking the basic rudiment as sixteenth notes and splitting it into groups of four. But, before that you will play a group of two that will make the blocks of four stagger over the beat. This sounds complicated, but it will make sense after trying the first one. Each of these groups of four will be played on a different drum, in pretty much the same way you have done in the previous lessons. The intention here is to further improve your ability to move around the kit in 'blocks' of a set number and you will be expanding on this some more in later lessons. These patterns will work well as fills without any adjustment, but as with the previous, lesson a single stroke sticking is often preferable in that case.

Feet have been excluded for the sake of keeping the parts simple but when you are comfortable with the movements try adding in various different feet ideas. This will increase the difficult a little but can make the part sound a lot more interesting. Using straight quarter notes can really help highlight the unusual grouping. At the bottom of the page you will links to other free rudiment lessons that may help with learning the part.
