Moving Two Beat Fills In 6/4

In this lesson you will continue to learn about playing fills at different points in a bar of 6/4. The exercises on this page will be similar to those presented in our One Beat Fills In 6/4 That Aren't At The End Of The Bar lesson but this time the fills will last two bars. As the fill is twice as long, the amount of positions the fill can be in is slightly less.

The aim of this lesson is to develop your ideas for filling in the time signature of 4/4 and to hopefully provide another idea for general fill construction as all ideas presented here can be applied to other time signatures.

For each example you will be given a different beat of the bar the play the fill on, two examples will then be given. Any parts of the bar that aren't fill will be played as groove in these exercises.

Example 1

Play the fill on beat 1.

Example 2

Play the fill on beat 2. In this case you will land on a snare coming out of the fill to preserve the common time feel.

Example 3

Play the fill on beat 3. As with example 1, the fills here can end on a snare to keep the common time groove feel.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises upto a tempo of at least 125bpm.
  2. Play a four bar phrase in 6/4 where the fourth bar contains one of these fills.
  3. Create further variaions on each example.
  4. Experiment with applying this concept to longer fills.
