The fills presented in this lesson are based on our Double Kick Imitation Fours Exercise and will be constructed in a similar way to our Double Kick Imitated Twos fills. The patterns are built of four 16th notes on the hands played as single strokes, followed by the same rhythm played on the feet using two bass drum pedals. These fills are relatively simple sounding but can be very effective, particularly when higher tempos are used. Listed below are various ideas for orchestrating the hands followed by a short piece with some of the fills applied practically.
Be aware that when you combine these patterns with a groove you will be playing the four 16ths on the feet at the end of the fill followed by another kick at the start of the groove in the next bar. This will create a Single Stroke 5 style pattern on the feet.
Example 1
Moving the hands across two toms.
Example 2
Orchestrate the hands with the right on the floor tom and left on the high tom.
Example 3
Use groups of two for the hands.
Example 4
Using groups of one and two for the hands.
Example 5
An odd grouping.
TASK
- Using the 2 minute rule, get all examples up to a tempo of around 150bpm.
- Experiment with shortening the length of all fills.
- Add all fills to a structured piece.
- Create your own versions of these fills
A Short Piece
Below is a short piece that uses some of the ideas presented in this lesson.
