Adding A C Section To An Eight Bar Phrase

This lesson continues the idea we discussed in the Four Bar Version of this lesson. The letters used in the structure have the exact same meaning, so 'A' is a groove, 'B' is a variation on the groove or a short fill and 'C' is a full fill. The structure for the this version is shown below:

An eight bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

So compared to the previous version you are using a lot more of the 'A' section. Below I've listed four examples of this structure with a drum part applied. I have used a combination of eighth and sixteenth note fills.

Example 1

Here you just add in an extra eighth note kick to create the 'B' section.

Example 2

In this version you play a quarter note snare and crash for the 'B' and the 'C' uses a similar idea for the fill construction.

Example 3

This time you are using a Four On The Floor groove for the 'B' bar.

Example 4

Finally two lots of sixteenth notes are added for the 'B' section and the fill makes use of quarter notes and crashes.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all phrases up to a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  2. Create your own versions of these patterns based on the original phrase.
