Double Time Grooves With 16th Note Rests

In this lesson you will be developing the grooves learned in our previous double time grooves lesson by adding 16th note rests. These patterns will involve playing a 16th note 'between' the hi hats so it might be worth working on our 16th Note Hand / Foot Independence Lesson before starting this lesson.

A counting checker has been included for each groove to ensure you have the timing right. In each example start off at a slow tempo and gradually build the speed up, use the Two Minute Rule if necessary.

Groove 1

This is the same as the first groove from the previous lesson but you will be replacing the first of the double 16th notes with a rest.

Groove 2

Now add the 16th note rest pattern on beat 3. If we compare this groove to groove 1 you could say that the kick that was on beat three has been 'displaced' to the right. This basically means it has been shuffled across to the next 16th note.
