In this lesson you will be learning some ideas for constructing fills that are built from groove style patterns. I'll be showing this in a 'conceptual' way, meaning that I will present an idea for constructing the fill and providing a couple of examples of how that can be applied. You should then see what variations you can come up with from that. By setting yourself 'rules' that the fill has to follow, you can make some awesome sounding parts. This is something I do all the time to try and push myself creatively. In the examples below I have given some of these rules followed by 3 fills following them. Again, learn the parts then try applying them in the structural ideas.
Idea 1
Play snare drums on all quarter note beats.
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Idea 2
Only play kicks and snares on the '+' counts
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Idea 3
Play a groove but start it on the second 8th note
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
TASK
- Learn all the above examples then use in the A A A B structure from the previous lesson.
- Use the three given ideas to create your own groove fills.
