Sticking For The Reverse Triplet In 3/4

In this lesson you will be taking the reverse triplet and applying it within the context of 3/4, meaning that in each bar there will be one less block of the rudiment. The exercises on this page should be fairly straight forward if you are familiar with the original rudiment (linked below), the focus on your practice here should be getting comfortable with the sticking in the new time signature. When orchestrations and feet start being applied, the feel of the time signature will become much more prominent.

Below I have shown the rudiment as eighth note triplets in both standard and reverse sticking.

Exercise 1

A reverse triplet in 3/4 with standard sticking.

A standard triplet in 3/4 with reverse sticking

Exercise 2

A reverse triplet in 3/4 with reverse sticking.

A standard triplet in 3/4 with reverse sticking

Tasks

  • Learn the two stickings up to a tempo of at least 160bpm.
  • Orchestrate the parts.
  • Add feet to the parts.
  • Apply the sticking in different time signatures.
