Quarter Note Triplet Groove With Offbeat Eighths

In this lesson you be expanding on the quarter note triplet groove learned in a previous level 3 lesson. You can find a link to this at the bottom of the page and I strongly recomend you are familiar with its contents before starting this lesson. The focus through this page is going to be on adding some extra snares around the 'back beat' that will fit in between the right hands. When played constantly the hands will actually end up playing an accented single stroke triplet so this groove has a lot in common with the standard sixteen beat.

We will be looking at two different versions of the same idea, one that uses standard notes and one that uses ghost notes. Around these the main back beat snares will be accented to make them stand out from the decorative notes. The logical starting point will be the hand pattern. This is shown below both with and without ghost notes.

The base rhythm for this groove concept

Spend a moment playing that simple pattern along with a metronome, making sure the dynamics differences between all notes are clear. The next step will be to add in bass drums in various differnet patterns. Several ideas for this are shown below. I have tried to use as many different ideas as possible but remember to use this as a starting point to get creative with. Some of these placements can be quite tricky so try and 'latch' some of the kicks to right hands.
