Full Bar 8th Note Triplet Fills In 5/4 Using Simple Orchestrations

In this lesson you will be learning some fills in the time signature of 5/4 that all use 8th note triplets orchestrated around the kit in simple movements. These patterns will use similar movements to first orchestrations you will have learned so it is just the idea of extending the fill over 5 beats that needs to be worked on. Because of the way the sticking falls, the start of the bar that follows the fill will be played with a left hand rather than a right when using a Single Stroke Sticking. An option for avoiding this is to use a Standard Triplet sticking, but there isn't a huge need for this.

I recomend working through our lessons on Time Signatures, 5/4 Grooves and the lesson linked above before proceeding with this lesson.

When learning these fills, start the pattern slowly and make sure your note and hand placement is accurate. When you are happy with the movements start to build up the tempo a little at a time. Once you can play the part at a good speed (I'd recomend 150bpm plus) try playing an AAAB style pattern all in 5/4 where the 'B' section is your new fill.

TASK

  1. Learn the examples shown above upto a tempo of at least 140bpm.
  2. Create your own variations on each example by moving around the orchestration.
  3. Add the fills into a structured pattern.
  4. Look through our list of single stroke roll orchestrations and experiment with applying these to the time signature of 5/4.
