One Beat 'R L L F' Groove Decoration In 3/4

In this lesson you will be adding one occurance of the 'R L L F' pattern to various grooves in the time signature of 3/4 to create simple decorative patterns. This will be a development of This Lesson where the same idea was applied in 4/4. This lesson will be far easier if you have covered the previous lessons.

In some cases the straight 'R L L F' pattern will be used but in others additional kicks and right hands will be added. Be sure to start each pattern with a slow tempo and gradually build up to a decent speed. In those examples that use ghost notes, make sure the ghosted notes are dramatically quieter than the rest of the bar.

The aim here is just to provide you with more options for construction of grooves in this time signature. Remember to improvise using the given patterns and try to come up with your own ideas based on what has been given.

Example 1

The pattern has been placed on beat 3 and the whole groove can be thought of as a 'cut off' version of the first pattern presented in the 4/4 lesson linked above.

Example 2

This groove is a standard 'waltz' type pattern where beats 2 and 3 are highlighted with a snare. The decoration is added on beat 1.

Example 3

A sort of half time feel groove with the main snare accent on beat 3. The decoration is added on beat 2 to pre-empt the main accent.

Example 4

A similar pattern to example 3 but with the decoration on beat 1. On Beats 2 and 3 some extra 16th notes have been added to the right hand which emmulates the rhythm of the 'R L L F' pattern.

Example 5

A more complicated 'cut off' style groove. In this there are toms that move around the kit throughout the bar, starting with the 'R L L F' pattern on beat 1.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get the grooves up to a tempo of at least 130bpm.
  2. Apply these grooves to a phrased pattern as any section.
