'Please Please Me' Groove

In this lesson you will be learning a groove inspired by the song Please Please Me by The Beatles. You can hear the full groove from the start of the verse at around the 7 second mark in the video linked. The groove in question can be thought of as a variation on Groove Example 9, as it is just this groove with an additional snare on the '+' after beat 2.

The full groove looks like this:

A simple groove

If you were to remove the right hand the kicks and snares would be counted '1 2+ 3 4'. The full song is played at 140bpm, which is quite quick for a level 0 part, but the groove will work at any tempo. In the original recording the ride is used for the right hand, feel free to experiment with placing the right hand on various different parts of the kit to see how it affects the sound of the part.

To help get a feel for the groove I have included a sheet piece that uses it extensively. I have used similar fills the song so with a few minor tweaks and some repetition you could make this fit to the recording.

A short piece focusing on applying this groove.

TASK

  1. Learn all given examples up to a tempo of at least 135bpm.
  2. Experiment with creating your own grooves using displaced snares.
  3. Try playing a long to the full ACDC song.
