Offbeat 16th Kicks

A guide on how to add bass drums between the hi hats.

This lesson is going to be quite similar to our Offbeat 16th Snares lesson, only instead of putting snares on the offbeat we will be putting bass drums. Before starting this lesson I strongly advise that you look at this Co Ordination Exercise and our 16th Note Groupings lesson.

In these exercises you will see bass drums both on and between hi hat notes so to familiarize you with that idea some exercises are listed below. In these exercises and grooves there will be constant 8th note hi hats with kicks added in on 'e' or 'a' counts at various points in the bar. For most of the exercises and all of the following grooves there will only be one 16th note kick, but there may be extra 16th note snares. For the sake of keeping this a bit simpler, I will avoid putting two 16th note kicks in a row.

As with the snare exercises, I am going to use two different forms of notating. The first will be the kicks and hi hats notated in the same voice, to show more clearly what the rhythm is. The second is in the more standard notation with the hi hat and kick in separate voices. The two versions will be played and counted exactly the same.
