Straight Rhythms And Bosa Nova On The Hands || Free Groove Lesson

In this free groove lesson you will learn another 'Multi Layered' groove idea, this time combining straight rhythms with the Bosa Nova rhythm. Before starting I recomend looking at the lesson on the Bosa Nova linked at the bottom of the page a long with some of our other grooves using similar ideas to give you a good basic knowledge of what's going to happen. In each example below one hand will keep a straight eighth or quarter note while the other hand plays the bosa nova rhythm, these can get quite difficult so take your time and build the part up slowly. I have included a quick note in each example describing what is happening. I have stuck to level 0 style kick placements to keep things simple but experiment with more complex placements are you get more comfortable with the parts.

Example 1

Eighth note right hand on the ride with the left playing the bosa nova on the hi hat.

Example 2

For this version of the free groove lesson, reverse the hands of the previous examples so eighth notes are now on the left using a hi hat and the bosa nova is on the ride using the right hand. Because of the way the part falls the constant eighth notes are disrupted for the snares.

Example 3

Switch the constant ryhthm to quarter notes using the crash ride then use the hi hat to play the bosa nova on the hi hat.

Example 5

Switching to half time using the ride as eighth notes for the constant rhythm and a cowbell on the left with the bosa nova. Note that the part actually flows much nicer in half time as both rhythms are allowed to be played in full. You can find more free groove lessons around the site on both of these topics.
