In this continuation on our lessons in building fills from a Single Stroke 7 you will be adding accents and kick drums on the eighth note counts. This is quite a simple pattern but creates a great sound part.

As with all other lesson, you will be given the basic fill first followed by ideas for combining with groove, ideas for variation and finally an example piece. Ideas for varying the feet have been removed as they are an important part of this fill in its original format.

Single Stroke 7 Fill 4

The basic version of this fill is made up of one occurrence of the single stroke 7, so is half a bar long. It looks like this:

Basic FIll

Fill 3

TASK

  • Spend time getting this fill up to a tempo of at least 90bpm.

Adding Groove

Now fill up the rest of the bar up with groove. It doesn't matter what groove you use as long as it's only half a bars worth. Below are a couple of examples.

Grooved Version 1

Fill 3 with groove

Grooved Version 2

Fill 3 with groove

Grooved Version 3

Fill 3 with groove

TASK

  • Spend time getting these patterns up to a tempo of at least 90bpm.

Ideas For Varying The Fill

Listed below are some ideas for altering the orchestration.

Move the first two accents to toms.

Variation 1

Variation 2

Move the accents to crashes.

Variation 2

Variation 3

Move the first six notes around the kit.

Variation 3

TASK

  • Spend time getting these patterns up to a tempo of at least 90bpm.

Extending To A Full Bar

In these fills the last half of the bar will be the original fill and the first half plays something else to create a full bar fill. Three versions of this idea are listed below.

Full Bar Variation 1

In this version the first half of the bar simulates the second but using sixteenth notes.

Full bar fill 3

Full Bar Variation 2

Again you are using a simulation idea here but this time using some toms.

Full bar fill 3

Full Bar Variation 3

Using crashes and flams.

Full bar fill 3

TASK

  • Spend time getting these patterns up to a tempo of at least 90bpm.

Example Piece

The short piece below includes various versions of the fill combined with different grooves. The sticking has been excluded in each fill so remember to use the single stroke 7.

An example piece using this fill.
