This lesson will continue to develop your ability to change time signature within a four bar phrase. In this case you will be using the 'A A A B' pattern used extensively in Level 1 but now 'A' means the time signature is 4/4 and 'B' the time signature is 5/8.

The aim of these exercises is to get you comfortable with changing time signature part way through a piece. This is a very useful skill generally as time signature changes are common across all styles of music. If you are interested in playing metal or progressive music (prog. rock / prog. metal etc..) it is almost a standard feature.

The structure for this exercise will look like this:

A four bar phrase using 6/4 for the 'B' section.

Written below are ten examples of parts you could play for this structured pattern. I have tried to use a wide variety of ideas for both sections. Remeber to repeat each phrases several times over as you need to be able to swith both into and out of the new time signature without any breaks.

Example 1

A four bar phrase using 4/4 and 6/4.

Example 2

A four bar phrase using 4/4 and 5/8.

Example 3
