In this lesson you will be adding one occurance of the 'R L L F' pattern to various groove patterns to create simple decorative patterns. You will be presented with common time and half time versions for each example. Make sure you have covered the linked lesson on the basic R L L F pattern and can play it at a decent tempo, 130 and above would be ideal.
In some cases the straight 'R L L F' pattern will be used but in others additional kicks and right hands will be added. Be sure to start each pattern with a slow tempo and gradually build up to a decent speed. In those examples that use ghost notes, make sure the ghosted notes are dramatically quieter than the rest of the bar.
Example 1
A common time groove adding the pattern on beat 3 with a kick on the 'R' then adding a hi hat on the second 'L'. Getting the dynamics around the hi hat can be a bit tricky so don't be afraid to spend some time working on that short section.
Example 2
A half time pattern adding the 'R L L F' on beat 4.
Example 3
Adding the 'R L L F' on beat one where quarter notes are used in a common time groove. Note that the second of the double 'L's is louder.

Using the floor tom for the double 'L's.

Adding the pattern on beat 2.
TASK
- Using the 2 minute rule, get the grooves up to a tempo of at least 130bpm.
- Apply these grooves to a phrased pattern as any section.
