Sticking For The 9 Stroke Roll

The Nine Stroke Roll can be thought of as an extention of the Five Stroke Roll and Seven Stroke Roll where you played doubles over specific blocks of 16th notes. For the nine stroke roll in the time signature of 4/4 you will play eight sixteenth notes followed by a minim. The groupings of this rudiment fall nicely into the time signature of 3/4 and another set of lessons will be given on that.

As with the five and seven stroke rolls, there are two versions of the 9 Stroke Roll. The first starts on the beat and the second ends on the beat. For both of these rhythms there are three stickings you should learn. These are all listed below.


Exercise 1

A 9 Stroke Roll starting on the beat starting on the right hand.

The 9 Stroke Roll in standard sticking.


Exercise 2

A 9 Stroke Roll starting on the beat starting on the left hand.

The 9 Stroke Roll in reverse sticking.


Exercise 3

A 9 Stroke Roll starting on the beat with alternating sticking.

The 9 Stroke Roll in alternate sticking.


Exercise 4

A 9 Stroke Roll ending on the beat starting on the right hand.

The 9 Stroke Roll in standard sticking.


Exercise 5

A 9 Stroke Roll ending on the beat starting on the left hand.

The 9 Stroke Roll in reverse sticking.


Exercise 6

A 9 Stroke Roll ending on the beat with alternate sticking.

The 9 Stroke Roll in alternate sticking.
