Single Stroke 7 Fills - Linear Pattern Between Kick, Snare And Hi Hat

In this lesson you will be creating fills based on a Single Stroke Seven the are all Linear Patterns. To recap, a linear pattern is a part that only ever has one note played at a time. Technically speaking, a roll around the kit without any feet could be classed as a linear pattern but we are going to create something more interesting than that. Each fill will loosely follow a single stroke seven sticking and rhythm but will be split between the hi hat, bass drum and snare.

These patterns require good co ordination between the limbs so it may be worth looking back over our level 1 and 2 hand/foot co ordination and independance exercises first.

Each of the fills below is written as a half bar pattern. They can easily be extended to full bar fills by playing twice or adding some other fill idea for the first half of a bar. A short piece is given below to show the fills applied practically.

TASK

  • Using the 2 minute rule, get the fills up to a tempo of around 120bpm.
  • Create your own fills using this idea.
  • Apply all fills to a phrased example.

Below is a short piece that en corporates the fill idea from this lesson:
