Offbeat Eighth Note Right Hand Pattern Using Open Hi Hats

In this lesson you will be playing an Offbeat 8th right hand part in a groove and opening the hi hat on the off beat then closing it on the numbered counts. Before starting this lesson it would be worth working through our controlling hi hats lesson as this will be directly applied here.

To achieve the sound we want for these grooves you will end up playing quarter notes on the left foot throughout. On the numbered counts the foot will be pressed down and on the '+' counts it will be lifted right up. The right hand and left foot part looks like this:

You will count this '1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +' with the right hand being played on the '+' and the left foot on all numbered counts.

When kicks and snares are added in a simple quarter note pattern they will always have a left foot hi hat played at the same time as them. That would look like this:
