3/4 Grooves - Cut Off 4/4

This is a follow on lesson from our 3/4 Waltz Groove lesson, it would be worth reading this first as it contains information on the time signature. The second way you can approach 3/4 is as a bar of 4/4 with the last beat cut off. This is particularly effective when it is a single bar of 3/4 added into a block of 4/4. Let's apply this idea to this bar of of 4/4 groove:

A bar of 4/4 groove.

To cut this down to 3/4 you will literally just end the bar on the '+' after 3. Giving you this:

A bar of 3/4 groove.

TASK

  • Play three bars of the given 4/4 groove followed by one bar of the 3/4 example. Repeat this pattern over.
  • Go back through the grooves given in the Grooves Introduction lesson series and experiment with cutting them down to 3/4.
  • Create more four bar phrases with various different 4/4 and 3/4 patterns.
  • The alternate way to think of this is as 2/4 with an extra beat added. Experiment with this idea.
