In this lesson I am going to give ideas for fills you could play in Swing Time. These fills will be constructed of swung eighth notes and eighth note triplets. Remember that all of the examples below are in swing time so any eighth notes you see will really be an eighth note triplet with the middle note missing. If you are unsure on how this works, revisit the lessons above.
Unless shown otherwise, use a single stroke sticking for all fills.
Example 1
Swung eighth notes played around the kit.
Example 2
The left hand stays on the snare whilst the right hand moves.
Example 3
Straight eighth notes triplets moved around the kit.
Example 4
Triplets with crashes.
Example 5
Combining the two rhythms with some feet added.
Example 6
TASK
- Using the 2 minute rule, get all fills up to a tempo of at least 135bpm.
- Add each example into one of the structures we have covered previously.
- Create your own fill pattern using these concepts.
- Use various feet patterns in each fill.
