Single Stroke Roll Accents Lesson: e+a Groupings

The single stroke roll is one of the most basic rudiments, which means it is great to use for experimenting with new ideas and movements. In this rudiment lesson you will learn another Single Stroke Roll Accent placement where you will pick out the 'e+a' rhythm within straight sixteenth notes. This will give you three accented notes out of every four, so there are more accents than standard strokes here and the one standard stroke out of each four will the first, which is played on a right. I find this movement a little trickier than others but I find it helps to keep the sound of the rhythm running in my head as I play it.

As I say quite often...when playing the part make sure you are using proper technique, in particular stick heights around the switch between standard and accented strokes. If you are struggling with any of the movements given here, work through some of the exercises linked at the bottom of the page. There are some simpler single stroke roll acccent patterns that will help you build up to these slightly busier movements.

As I suggest in most lessons, start learning the part at a much lower tempo and only start building up speed when you can play the given example consistantly over several repitions.
