Single Stroke Roll Accents Lesson: 1 +a Groupings

The single stroke roll is the most basic rudiment which means it is a great one to use for experimenting with new ideas. In this rudiment lesson you will learn another Single Stroke Roll Accent placement where you will pick out the '1 +a' rhythm within straight sixteenth notes. This will give you three accented notes out of every four, so there are more accents than standard strokes here and the one standard stroke out of each four will fall on the left. This is mostly straight forward as you just need to remember to not accent the second stroke of every four.

When playing the part, keep a close eye on technique, in particular stick heights around the switch between accented and standard strokes. If you are feeling uncomfortable with any of the movements given here, have a look at some of the exercises linked at the bottom of the page. There are some simpler single stroke roll acccent patterns that will help you build up to these slightly busier movements.

As I suggest in most lessons, start learning the part at a much lower tempo and only start building up speed when you can play the given example consistantly over several repitions.
