Double Stroke Roll In Sixes || A Double Stroke Roll Orchestration Lesson

In this lesson you will learn some more ideas for orchestrating a double stroke roll. The exercises below use a slightly more complicated syncopated grouping where the sixteenth note version of the standard rudiment is played in blocks of six as much as possible. You have sixteen beats of space to play this other, so using some simple maths you can work out that you can fit two blocks of six in a bar with four stroke left over. These three blocks are then played on different parts of the kit. Feet are given under each example and the straight rhythms used really help emphasize the syncopated grouping of the hands. The intention of these exercises is to further improve your ability to move around the kit in 'blocks' of a set number and you will be expanding on this some more in later lessons. These patterns will work well as fills without any adjustment so try combining them with various grooves.

Focus on keeping all strokes in these double stroke roll orchestrations even, so all left hands are played at the same dynamic level as rights and that sixteenth note rhythm is consistant throughout. Play with a metronome to help with this and always keep an eye on your technique, particularly your grip and stick heights.
