Groove Development: 07-09-2021 (2 Bar 3/4 Using Cowbells)

Building a two bar 3/4 groove using multiple layers of rhythm combining percusion and ghosted snares.

In this lesson pack you will be learning a complex two bar groove in 3/4 that combines multiple layers of rhythm played on various parts of the kit including a cowbell. This is built up over five steps and a new element of the part is added each time, this should allow you to build up the more complex part easier as you don't have as much thrown at you in one go. It is very important that you can play the step you are on comfortably before moving on as any parts you get stuck on are going to appear in all subsequent steps.

Step 1

Let's start with a level 0 3/4 Groove where the right hand plays quarter notes on a cowbell, the left foot keeps time with eighth notes on the hi hat pedal and kicks and snares are added as simple eighth notes.

Step 2

Standard Offbeat Kicks and snares are added on count 2 of both bars and count 2 of the second. Make sure these fall exactly between the appropriate left feet counts.

Step 3

Four more cowbells are added on '+' counts through both bars.

Step 4

The right hands on the 3 of both bars and the 1 of the second bar are Pushed Back a sixteenth note to create a more musical rhythm on the cowbell.

Step 5

Add two more right hand cowbells, the first on the 'a' after count 1 of the first bar and the second after count 2 of the second bar.
