Sticking For The Single Stroke Roll In 9/8

The single stroke roll is a very straight forward rudiment that involves playing one hand at a time over any given note value. This has been applied as crotchets, quavers and semi quavers within many other time signatures and in this lesson you will be switching this to 9/8. If you have covered the 4/4 and 3/4 versions of this lesson the exercises given here will be much easier and you can find these linked at the bottom of the page. The intention with this lesson is more about familiarizing you with the new time signature and how the single stroke sticking feels within it.

The time signature of 9/8 can be described as a 'compound' time signature which differs to 4/4 which is a 'simple' time signature. In simple time signatures, which most of what you have learned so far will have fallen in, all notes are most commonly grouped into blocks of 2, 4 or 8 where as in compound signatures common groupings are 3 and 6. I have included links to more detailed lessons on this subject at the bottom of the page.

Listed below are three versions of the single stroke sticking applied to the time signature of 9/8 played across three different rhythms. Both standard and reverse sticking has been applied, be sure to apply both.
