Linear 16th Note Fills In 9/8 Using 5 Note Groupings

In this 9/8 fill construction lesson you will learn another syncopated linear pattern but this time based on groupings of five that will fall noticeably out of line with the 9/8 compound pulse. At the bottom of the page you will find links to lessons you may find helpful, including some of the movements common in the fill. The basis of this pattern is going to be five sixteenth notes repeated three times followed by a group of three to fill up the bar.

Listed below are several ideas using this concept in various different orchestrations and movements. In the first example I have orchestrated a basic version of the fill on the snare and have included phrase markings to clarify the groupings.
