7/8 Grooves With A Swung One Handed 16th Note Right Hand

In this lesson you will be taking the one handed sixteenth note right hand concept in 7/8 and switching the rhythm to swung sixteenths. These patterns are quite demanding on your hand stamina, at the bottom of this page you will find a list of lessons and exercises that will help develop this area of playing further.

The right hand is the main area of focus on in all grooves and exercises on this page. Once you can consistently play the 16th notes with the correct rhythm, various different kick and snare ideas from any previous groove concept lesson can be applied underneath. The rhythm for the right hand is where this lesson becomes a little different. As discussed in previous lessons, there is an abbreviated way to notate parts that are swung that avoids the score becoming too cluttered with triplet signs. The right part written in non abbreviated notation would look like this:

The right hand part of the groove

This is quite cluttered so what you will usually see instead of this is the swing time mark at the start of the piece that tells you any group of two 16th notes will be played as if it were a 16th note triplet with the middle note missing. To clarify this grouping, blocks of four 16ths will be beamed slightly differently, you can see this in the example below. So with the abbreviation the right hand looks like this:

The right hand part of the groove

The example shown directly above will sound exactly the same as the first right hand part, it is just notated in a much cleaner way.

Before attempting the grooves listed below, spend some time getting comfortable with this right hand part. Make sure you can play it smoothly and consistently at a tempo of at least 120bpm. Listed below is this right hand pattern with various different kick/snare combinations. Use the given parts as a basis to create your own grooves following this concept.
