Two Bar Grooves Built By Changing Two Beats

We can use the same concept discussed in our First Two Bar Groove Construction lesson, but edit two lots of a repeated part. If we use the first groove pattern from the previous example as a basis it would look like this:

2 Bar Grooves - Example 2a

Or this:

2 Bar Grooves - Example 2b

Let's see another example. We'll start with this groove:

2 Bar Grooves - Example 2c

In this first variation we are editing the third and fourth repetitions by removing the first kick drum:

2 Bar Grooves - Example 2d

We could also change the second and third repetition by adding an extra Quaver kick:

2 Bar Grooves - Example 2e

There are countless concepts like this you will come across throughout your time drumming. Eventually they will just become second nature, but while you are learning try and analyse what you are playing to spot the logic in the patterns.

TASK

  1. Try varying the two given patterns above with your own ideas.
  2. Below are two additional two bar grooves. First work out what the unvaried part might have been, the come up with your own two bar patterns based on this.
