Snare Kick Kick Triplet Fills

In this lesson you will be building fills around the idea of sub division. This is essentially when a note is split into smaller groupings and in this case you will be splitting up crotchets with eighth note triplets. This fills will be very straight forward but can sound very cool, especially at higher tempos. At the bottom of the page you will find a list of links you may find useful. These parts can be demanding on your foot stamina so it may be worth looking at some of those exercises.

The starting point for this pattern will be a full bar of quarter notes orchestrated with the snare on the left hand and a crash cymbal on the right hand. Like this:

The basic rhythm for these fills

The next step is to fill in the gaps between these notes with kicks. If we split these notes with one kick you get a run of straight eighth notes, which creates a fill ideas similar to one covered in level 1 that looks like this:

Splitting the rhythm

The base concept in this lesson is to expand on that by adding two evenly spaced kicks in between each quarter note. This creates a run of straight eighth note triplets and looks like this:

Splitting the rhythm

The above is the simplest version of the full fill. Spend some time getting comfortable with the part by playing it a long to a click at a low tempo. Watch your right foot and make sure those bass drums are played at an even speed. Listed below are some variations on this part that involve varying the length and orchestration. Use these as a basis to create your own versions of the fill.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all example fills up to a tempo of at least 130bpm.
  2. Combine the ideas above to create a wide variety of fills.
  3. Think up new variations on the original pattern.
  4. Apply the fills to a structured pattern.
