4/4 Grooves In 5/4

In this groove concept you will be creating two bar 5/4 patterns that are 4/4 groove ideas applied over the 5/4 time signature. The resulting grooves usually end up with a kick at the start of the first bar and a snare at the start of the second. This sounds complicated but is actually quite straight forward once you start playing it. A similar idea

Listed below are examples of grooves using this concept. This list starts simple by applying level 0 grooves to this concept then gets more complex through the page. Phrase marks have been added in each example to show where the original groove is falling in the bar. Notice that you get 2 and a half lots of the groove for each two bars of 5/4? If you were to extend the pattern to being four bars of 3/4 you would fit five whole lots of the original 4/4 pattern.

This idea can sometimes be refereed to as 'ignoring the time signature' and works with many different combinations of time signatures. It is very important that you practice these patterns with a metronome so you understand where the bars are falling.

At the bottom of the page you will find a list of links that should help with learning these parts.
