'A B C' Structure

In this lesson you will be learning a variation on the three bar AAB pattern learned previously at this level. To construct this new version you will take a similar approach to the level 1 ABAC style patterns but you with one of the 'A' sections removed, meaning you will be playing something different in every bar. As with previous patterns that follow a similar idea, these parts should tie together otherwise you run the risk of sounding like you don't know what you are doing! The way I tend to approach this is by having the B section be a sort of transition between the groove and fill, so it will be a bit of both.

The structure for these patterns is this:

A three bar phrase made up three different parts.

This structure could be used in similar circumstances discussed in the previous three bar phrase lesson linked above. Listed below are several example of this structure with a drum kit part applied. I have used a variety of different construction ideas but feel free to create your own parts. All patterns on this page are in the time signature of 4/4, separate lessons will be given for different time signatures.

Example 1

A three bar phrase made of three parts.
