Sixteenth Note 5 Stroke Roll With Moving Singles

This lessons follows on from our 16th Note 5 Stroke Roll Sticking and Five Stroke Roll With Each Hand On A Different Drum lessons. It will be much easier to follow if you are familiar with the content from that lesson.

In this 16th note 5 stroke roll orchestration concept the rudiment will be played all on the snare with the exception of any note played with a single stroke, which will be moved to various parts of the kit. For example, in the first exercise all double strokes are played on the snare and the singles are on the floor tom. Another way to think of this is all semi quavers on the snare and the quarter note on a tom. This is a very simple orchestration, the intention of which is to start your hands moving around in this rudiment.

Remember, you hands will always be playing a 5 stroke roll sticking in all exercises on this page. In the later exercises the single stroke will move more than once in the bar. I have included feet in all exercises, it may be worth removing them whilst you are learning the orchestration then adding them back in later. Experiment with using different feet patterns from our previous lessons. I have also included the two different timings of the rudiment, one starting on the beat and one ending on the beat.
