The Four Stroke Ruff With Eighth Note Feet

This lesson is a continuation of our Four Stroke Ruff With Quarter Note Feet lesson and it involves doubling the note values of the feet used in that lesson to eighth notes. The patterns used on this page are very similar to other eighth note feet patterns applied to other rudiments so the aim of this lesson is to work on the co ordination required when using grace notes in this manner. These exercises are worth learning as they will help build co ordination between your hands and feet whilst opening up new options for part construction.

Several ideas for this rudiment with eighth note feet are shown below. This is far from a complete list so look back at some of the previous rudiment exercises for more ideas. These exercises should be played with standard, reverse and alternate sticking.

TASKS

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises up to a tempo of 150bpm with good hand technique.
  2. Use all three sticking patterns with each exercise.
  3. Create your own feet patterns for the exercises.
  4. Play all 6 exercises as a continuous 5 bar pattern, then repeat.
