In this lesson I will show another hand to foot sixteenth note pattern that is very useful as an exercise in 'separating' your hands and feet and is also a great 'building block' for fill construction. You will be taking a semi quaver Single Stroke Roll and replacing the 'e' count with a bass drum, this is very similar to the R L R F exercise.
As with the similar lesson linked above, there isn't a lot to the two exercises presented on this page, you will just be learning it as eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Spend a lot of time making sure the kick is falling exactly in place then work on pushing the tempo. Our Hand/Foot Independance Exercise will be incredibly useful for sorting out the foot placement here.
In both exercises both standard and reverse sticking have been noted, practicing both will be very beneficial. Remember that when the kick is used, it will be replacing the hand that would have played. The two versions of the exercise are essentially the same, they just fit to the metronome in different ways due to the notation.

TASK
- Using the 2 minute rule, get the exercises up to a tempo of at least 110bpm.
- Experiment with orchestrating the parts.
- Try adding a left foot count. This will increase the co ordination challenge drastically.
- Add this short pattern into your fills.
