Single Stroke Double Kick '1 2 4' Exercise

In this double kick lesson you will continue devloping your basic abilities in this technique by focusing on speed. You will actually be playing a version of This Level 1 Exercise but exluding the triplets. A similar pattern has also been shown in This Lesson, the exercise on this page will further expand on those ideas. I will show three versions of this, one that is just the feet, one where the hands and feet play at the same time and a third version where the feet are played under a common time groove. The second of these is a useful co ordination exercise but also helps make sure the timing of your feet is correct. After practicing these exercises for a while in combination with the Two Minute Rule you should really start to notice your technique and general speed improve.

In all exercises make sure the feet and hands are completely in sync both in terms of timing and dynamics. Watch your left foot in particular. Remember that although the exercise starts slow, you will end up playing 16th notes. Start at a tempo where you will be able to comfortably play all note values used.
