This lesson will continue to develop your ability to change time signature within a four bar phrase. In this case you will be using the 'A A A B' pattern used extensively in Level 1 but now 'A' means the time signature is 4/4 and 'B' the time signature is 7/4. This will be much like previous exercises, just using different time signatures.
The aim of these exercises is to get you comfortable with changing time signature part way through a piece. This is a very useful skill generally as time signature changes are common across all styles of music. If you are interested in playing metal or progressive music (prog. rock / prog. metal etc..) it is almost a standard feature.
The structure for this exercise will look like this:
Written below are ten examples of parts you could play for this structured pattern. I have tried to use a wide variety of ideas for both sections. Remeber to repeat each phrases several times over as you need to be able to swith both into and out of the new time signature without any breaks. These patterns will feel quite long as using a bar of 7/4 adds an extra 3 beats, which is almost a whole extra bar.
- Using the 2 minute rule, get all phrases up to a tempo of at least 130bpm.
- Create your own versions of these patterns.
