Groove Development: 25-06-2019 (2 Bar Level 1 Using Two Right Hand Concepts)

A simple level 1 2 bar groove using 2 right hand concepts.

Through this lesson you will learn a two bar groove in 4/4 where a simple level 0 kick pattern is decorated with two different right hand concepts. There will be four modifications made to the level 0 groove, each of which makes the part slightly more difficult. It is also worth noting that each example creates its own perfectly decent sounding groove. In each step, a link to the original lesson of the concept applied is provided where appropriate, it is worth sidetracking and working through these lessons if you either get stuck or don't understand a particular step.

It's important you can play the step you are on comfortably at a decent tempo before progressing as any parts you get stuck on are going to appear in all subsequent steps. At the bottom of the page you will find a list of helpful links and a set of target tempos.

As an additional exercise, try taking the concepts given and applying them in different ways. For example, in step 2 you add in the five note grouping. Try switching this to an alternate pattern. Continue through all steps with these changes and write down any ideas you like the sound of.

Step 1

The start point is a simple Level 0 Groove with the right hand playing a closed hi hat. Spend some time making sure the kick and snare sync up exactly with the right hand.

Step 2

In the first bar, remove any hi hats on numbered counts. This will leave right hand strokes just on the '+' counts.

Step 3

Switch the second bar to a 16 Beat, keeping the same kick and snare pattern. Watch the switch between the two bars, don't let the switch in rhythm throw off the timing.

Step 4

Open The Hi Hat on the '+' after count 3 of the first bar. Press the left foot down on the hi hat pedal on count 4 to shut this straight after.
