Building up a double kick groove in 5/4 that combines syncopated snares with a straight sixteenth rhythm.
In this lesson you will be learning a groove in 5/4 that combines a constant sixteenth note kick pattern with a syncopated rhythm on the kick and ride. This will be built up over five steps, each of which makes the groove slightly more difficult. It is also worth noting that each of these steps creates its own perfectly decent sounding groove. In each step a link to the original lesson of the concept applied is provided where appropriate. It would be worth sidetracking and working through these lessons if you either get stuck or don't understand a particular step.
As an additional exercise, when you have learned the steps as shown below try taking the concepts given and applying them in a slightly different way. For example in step 2 the syncopated rhythm is introduced, experiment with different groupings here to see how it will change the groove. Continue through all steps with any changes you make and write down any ideas you particularly like the sound of.

The starting point is a Bar Of 5/4 with sixteenth notes on the kick and eighth notes on the ride. Focus here on making sure all hands line up with the appropriate feet.
Over the first four beats, switch the right hand to a Syncopated rhythm where every third note is played. This means some right hands will fall inline with left feet, it is easy to let these notes slip in terms of timing so keep an eye on them.
Add snares under those syncopated right hands then also on counts 4 and 5. It is important that these snares line up with both the ride and kick to prevent the part sounding sloppy.
Re-orchestrate the second and fourth syncopated snares to toms. This creates a bit more of a melodic feel in the part.
Add a crash on count 5, inline with the snare.
