A groove using electronics played on a trigger pad.
In this lesson you will be learning a groove inspired by the song Hot N Cold by Katy Perry. The groove comes in right at the start of the video linked and is used mainly for the verse sections. The part in question is a one bar pattern that combines a simple quarter note four on the floor part with a triggered tom sound played on a sample pad with the left hand.
Through this page the part will be built up step by step, if you just want to see the full groove skip down to the bottom of the page. Make sure you can play the step you are on steadily at a decent tempo before moving on. The song is played at 132bpm but feel free to aim a little higher or lower in speed.
You will notice some odd notation used, the hollow circle with a dot in the center in the gap where the high tom normally sits. This represents an electronic tom sound that in this case will be played on a trigger pad that will ideally be located to the left of the kit.
- Learn all given examples up to a tempo of at least 130bpm but aim to get a little higher.
- Experiment with varying the rhythm played on the left hand.
- Try playing a long to the full Katy Perry song.
