Cymbal Groupings Of Two

Create a slightly syncopated fill where the notes are split into groups of two across different cymbals and drums.

In this continuation on our lessons in building fills from a Single Stroke 7 you will be playing the roll between rides hi hats and snares in a simple orchestration. As with all other lesson, you will be given the basic fill first followed by ideas for combining with groove, ideas for adding feet and finally an example piece.

Single Stroke 7 Fill 5

The basic version of this fill is made up of one occurrence of the single stroke 7, so is half a bar long. It looks like this:

Basic FIll

Adding Groove

Now fill up the rest of the bar up with groove. It doesn't matter what groove you use as long as it's only half a bars worth. Below are a couple of examples.

Extending To A Full Bar

In these fills the last half of the bar will be the original fill and the first half plays something else to create a full bar fill. Three versions of this idea are listed below.

Full Bar Variation 1

Start on a sextuplet roll followed by the original fill.

Full bar Fill 5

Full Bar Variation 2

A sixteenth note pattern starts to fill followed by the original seven stroke roll pattern.

Full bar Fill 5

Full Bar Variation 3

Using rides and hi hats throughout the bar.

Full bar Fill 5

TASK

  • Spend time getting these patterns up to a tempo of at least 90bpm.

The short piece below includes various versions of the fill combined with different grooves. The sticking has been excluded in each fill so remember to use the single stroke 7.
