Each double stroke will be moved to a different voice while all others remain on the snare. Great for building your ability to dart around the kit.
This lessons is another orchestration idea for the Dragadiddle. It is essential that you are familiar with this sticking for this lesson and you may find the exercises easier if you have covered other Dragadiddle orchestration lessons previously. The concept used in the construction of these exercises is similar to the Moving Quarter Notes and Moving Doubles orchestrations applied to the standard paradiddle.
In the orchestration exercises below, you will play a Dragadiddle on the snare and every time a double stroke is played you will be moving those hands to another part of the kit. The grace notes will always be on the snare. Because of the way the sticking for a paradiddle works, the order hand the doubles move in will alternate each time. In this Single Stroke Triplet Orchestration lesson I discussed the idea of 'splitting the kit', the same idea is applied here. Feet have been included all exercises but in those that include cymbals they might not be a pattern you have used before.
- Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises up to a tempo of at least 120bpm with good hand technique.
- Create your own feet patterns for the exercises.
- Play all 6 exercises as a continuous 6 bar pattern, then repeat.
- Experiment with using the given parts as fills.
