Sticking For The Paradiddle Diddle

The Paradiddle Diddle can be thought of in two ways. First as an extention of the Standard Paradiddle rudiment. Second as a combination of the Single Stroke Roll and Double Stroke Roll. It is spread over six notes rather than the eight you would find in a paradiddle and is similar to the Double Paradiddle in that it is generally played as a Sextuplet.

To create the basic pattern you will play two single strokes followed by two double strokes, giving you 'R L R R L L'. Because the rudiment is notated in sixes it can get quite quick, remember to start the exercises slow and gradually build up the tempo. Once you hit around 110bpm and above you can build some really intricate patterns that are great in fills and grooves. More on those in another lesson, the aim here is to familiarize you with the rudiment sticking and give exercises to start you moving it around the kit.

Listed below are snare exercises using the paradiddle diddle sticking. You will start out by playing as eighth note triplets to force you to keep the tempo low, followed by the full speed sextuplets. Standard and reverse stickings are given for each.
