This groove concept is fairly straight forward and can create a similar effect to our Extending Fills Concept. What you will be doing is rather than playing a crash on beat 1 of a phrase, play crashes on beats 1 and 2. The right hand for this groove concept looks like this:
In this lesson I will give examples of groove underneath this pattern along with ideas for some simple variations. There is a short piece at the end showing this concept being used practically.
Original Example
Shown below are two examples of kicks and snares applied with the original right hand pattern.

Example 2
Using Two Crashes As Crotchets
In this variation you will be combining two new ideas that you could split into separate concepts if you so wished. First of all the crashes on beats 1 and 2 will now use two different cymbals. Secondly, both cymbals will be played as quarter notes. The right hand would look like this:

Using The China On Beat 2
This variation is pretty similar to that last but again I will present two new ideas. First of all, don't play a crash on beat 1. Use the part of the kit that will be the riding part. Then on beat 2 use a China. This type of cymbal is great for accents, particularly when used at the same time as a snare so in this case beat two will be very strong. Here's the right hand part:

TASKS
- Learn the grooves above up to a tempo of at least 140bpm.
- Create some 4 bar phrases where this concept is applied to the groove. The best place to use this will be the first bar of the phrase.
Example Piece
The short piece below demonstrates the practical application of this concept.
