32nd Note Flicks Before Beat 2

In this lesson you will be taking a pattern similar to those covered in our Offbeat 16th Note Kicks and turning the 16th note kick into two 32nd second notes. These 32nd notes will be played using two feet, the first on the right the second on the left. Obviously to be able to play these exercises properly you will either need two bass drums or a double bass drum pedal.

In this lesson you will be covering a version of this bass drum placement where the notes fall on the 'a' after beat 1.

Placement 1

As discussed above, in the first set of exercises you will be adding a set of double 32nd notes on the 'a' count after beat 1. Lets start by learning a 'base' groove that excludes the double, you will then convert a 16th note kick to a double by adding an extra left foot. Here is the starting point:

The starting point

To add the flick you are going to place a left foot between the 16th note on the 'a' count and the snare in the groove above. That gives you this:

Adding the 32nd note flick

Spend some time getting comfortable with this groove, in the examples shown below additional kicks and snares have been added around this part.

Using Crotchets On The Right Hand

Finally lets experiment with switching the right hand to crotchets. Getting the flick in the right place becomes a little more difficult here as you don't have the eighth notes to place it between. It maybe worth playing a groove with quavers on the right hand then switching this to crotchets to help with the timing of the part. Below are three example grooves using a 32nd note flick when the right hand plays crotchets.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all grooves up to a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  2. Add a 32nd note flick to other grooves.
