Double Time Grooves With Kicks On The 'a' Count

In this lesson you will be developing the grooves learned in our Double 16ths In Double Time and 16th Note Rests In Double Time lessons by adding 16th notes on the 'a' count. This lesson will be much easier to follow if you have worked through these grooves already.

A counting checker has been included for each groove to ensure you have the timing right. In each example start off at a slow tempo and gradually build the speed up, use the Two Minute Rule if necessary.

Groove 1

In this first groove you are adding kicks on the 'a' after beats 1 and 3.

Groove 2

Using this idea you can create two distinct patterns. In the first you will get two 16th notes together, one on the 'a' and one on the following numbered count. In this groove you will achieve this by replacing the eighth note rests from the previous groove with bass drums. This gives a pattern similar to this groove but quicker.
