Paradiddle Groove Style Fill

The fill presented in this lesson is just a simple orchestration of the paradiddle but it sounds pretty cool. The idea is to play one hand on the snare then with the other play a cymbal with a bass drum. 3 Examples of this are shown below. This concept is very similar to the Paradiddle Groove.

Example 1

Play the left hand on the snare and the right on the ride.

Example 2

Switch the hands. So the right is on the snare and the left will now play a crash.

Example 3

A slightly tougher version where the second note of the double stroke is played on the bell of the ride.

TASKS

  1. Practice the fills until you can play them at a tempo of at least 110bpm.
  2. Use the given ideas to create your own variations on this paradiddle fill.

Below are a few example of this fill being applied practically in short 4 bar phrases. I have used new variations on the basic idea to give you more ideas for using this concept in fill construction.

Phrase 1

In the fill, two high toms have replaced the snares on the last two beats.

Phrase 2

A half bar version of the fill has been used here.

Phrase 3

The fill here is a slightly more complex orchestration. The cymbals and kick drums are doing the same but the snare has been replaced with tom hits that move around the kit.
