Triple Stroke Roll In Groups Of Three

As with all rudiment exercises, orchestrating is an important step. In the exercises presented on this page you will learn six orchestrations for the triple stroke roll that all involve moving in groups of three. This means that on every numbered count you change voicing, in exactly the same way you did other triplet rudiments following a similar idea. At the bottom of the page you will find links to some lessons that may assist the learning process.

Feet have been included in all exercises but only as quarter notes. For this orchestration concept it is acceptable to use the same drum twice within a bar as long as two groups of three aren't played on the same drum in a row. For example '3x Snare, 3x High Tom, 3x Mid Tom, 3x Snare' is acceptable but '3x Snare, 3x Snare, 3x High Tom, 3x Mid Tom' is not. Remember to use the swiss army triplet 'Both Right Left' sticking through each exercise. it is also worth noting that in terms of orchestrating, the unison notes are counted as one note. So both hands will still play on the same drum. A lesson on doing something different around the unison note will be given on a separate page.
